Placentophagia is a medical term meaning 'placenta eating'. No, that's not a typo! Women around the world (and thousands in the U.S.) actually eat their placenta or capsules made from their placenta to relieve many after-birth issues.
I remember the first time I saw an animal give birth. It was the family cat, and I was shocked to see her clean the babies up after birth and immediately eat the placenta. Honestly, I thought she was just being thoughtful, knowing she was giving birth on the carpet in the living room! Little did I know then that humans (or at least American women!) are the only mammals who do NOT eat their placentas! Who knew?!
We can learn something from the animal kingdom. There is much nutrition and essential hormones in that placenta that is critical to our recovery, and the health of our newborn.
